Flinders Ranges

I've travelled much of Australia and I will say there is nothing like the Flinders Ranges, anywhere. This magnificent, rugged beauty, is an experience you will never forget. Untouched by civilisation this is an experience you will want to have, even if it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you will be glad you did it.

Flinders Ranges is about a four hour drive from Adelaide and the South Australian government has been gracious with this natural beauty by offering everything from free campsites to helicopter camping in the outback. How you get there is up to you. Whether you are a van lifer or prefer to join a catered tour, its all on the table here.

The weather is good enough for the next few weeks before winter sets in and early spring are good times to go explore. The hottest months of January through to March can be challenging in this area due to the extreme heat that can hit during the day. Evenings can be very cold, as it is a desert.

The South Australian tourist board has this good 3 day travel itinerary for people that want an action packed few days, and ticking all the boxes for experiences during that time.

For a self drive, self paced experience it might be best to check out Tripadvisor to put a personal itinerary together using others ratings and ideas to help with that.

The third option is joining a tour like SA Eco Tours that offer everything in the package, including travelling to Flinders Ranges and back to Adelaide.

The Flinders Ranges is not for the inexperienced, if you choose to self drive, you will need water, some food and supplies. Do include some research for a self drive tour, on how to manage a trip like this.

This untouched beauty is worth the effort but requires some organisation.

Remember to take cameras, phones, and rechargers, to capture this unique trip, you will not regret this experience in Outback, South Australia.

For some film viewing The Rover, starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and the film The Water Diviner starring Russell Crowe had some scenes filmed around the area.
